KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD – REVIEW

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Djimon Honsou
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 126mins
Cert: 12A

Aaaand, we’re back!

This time with the legendary/fantasy epic-cum-East End Gangster film; that is Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword!

As the title suggests, this take on the King Arthur legend; focuses on the legendary sword Excalibur and the power which it possesses. In this rendering; the powers of Excalibur have been linked to the blood line of Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana); father to Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) and brother to the jealous and vengeful Vortigern (Jude Law).

Now, think of the movie baby of Troy, Green Street and The Lion King and you can get an idea of the feel of this film as well as see the initial story; jealous uncle takes out the noble King and sets his sights on the rightful heir to the throne. However, that my friend; is where the cliches end and where the real fun begins.

Ritchie has managed to take the Arthurian legend and adapt it in a way that it is both modern ridiculously entertaining. Arthur for example, lives in Londinium a few days ride from Camelot which gives the whole thing a time frame that was never really established before. Magic is explained as a contained entity that is manifested through powerful individuals called Mages and while the infamous Merlin is mentioned; he plays no major part. Instead, Ritchie has focused on the sword’s power as well as the devil-may-care but good natured soul of Arthur, which Hunnam executes perfectly.

While Arthur, in the beginning has no understanding of who and what he is; by the time he comes into his own and accepts the power of the sword (this scene is probably the best part!); he does so in a way that is believable and current. The character that was built up prior to his ascension; is maintained throughout the film and you are able to sympathise with his reluctance as well as rejoice in his acceptance of his birthright.

The only let down of the film is probably the heavy use of SFX in a few of the fight scenes. While I realise that these were used to highlight the magnitude of the sword’s powers; the final battle for example goes very quickly and is hard to follow. While SFX are used well in some parts; at one point it looked weird like when Neo had to fight all the Agent Smiths in The Matrix Reloaded and his body went all funny looking! Other than that, everything else works amazingly well.

While I’m not a huge fan of Jude Law, he plays a decent villain in this film. Quiet and refined though innately petty and cruel; he does very well. There is a scene in which there are some cleverly placed props and gestures that remind you of a certain German dictator. While creepy; so so good! The supporting cast of British talent including Aiden Gillen aka Peter Baelish from Game of Thrones; encompass the Kray era/Merry Men attitude to the film and make it an incredibly hilarious and entertaining watch. Arthur’s advisor and link to his royal lineage in Sir Bedevere (Djimon Honsou) provides copius amounts of banter that will have anyone giggling. The soundtrack is spectacular and the use of alternative camera angles and SFX takes you on an a exciting journey that has you hooked from the very beginning.

Lastly, if all the reasons above havent made you want to see it then the fact that David Beckham is in it should do the trick!

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is out May 8th.

TERMINATOR: GENISYS – REVIEW

Review

terminator-genisys-sequels-release-dates

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke
Director: Alan Taylor
Running Time: 126mins
Cert: 12A

Now lets see, ignoring the fact that the Terminator series is essentially the same story told over and over again from different angles and perspectives and timelines and dimensions or whatever, this particular installment was actually pretty good!

For the fans who are familiar with the Terminator films, Genisys goes back to the first film when the bad T-800 (Schwarzenegger) is sent to kill Sarah Connor (Clarke). However, things have changed some what and instead of a lowly waitress who has no idea what special child she is supposed to bring forth from her womb to save the world; instead Sarah is a bad ass terminator killing machine…..no pun intended.

Anyway, because of this, we get a very convincing digital version of the younger Arnie who subsequently confronts the older Arnie who is now Sarah’s protector and has been for a number of years whereby she affectionately calls him Pops. Too sweet! There are further nostalgic moments of machine awesomeness from Terminator 2: Judegement Day, which is the best one in my opinion! The T-1000 or liquid metal terminator to you lesser mortals is as sick as ever, but not as sick as the ultimate villain; a new and obviously improved, hybrid terminator thing that just never seems to die! Seriously, its dope! Look out for the MRA scene which was visually very cool in deed and also the “walking out of the explosion unscathed scene”. There are more than one but you’ll know the one i mean!

Story aside, there is a bit of slow motion overkill in this film and although there are some choice moves from the T-1000 in terms of shock factor, its all pretty visual. Its all visual obviously but i mean in terms of the effects used to create excitement rather than any real brain frying back story or deep emotional acting etc. There are however no epic battles between the machines that we haven’t seen before. A few bent mental railings to show that yes, they are made of metal and are extremely heavy, was not really enough.

By way of acting, our girl Khaleesi did good. Wondering whether she would be able to make them jump from the fantasy epic that is Game of Thrones to an ultra modern she-now-gets-to-shoot-guns big screen film was questionable, but she has done extremely well and the American accent isn’t at all bad. Jai Courtney aka John McClane Jr is a decent choice of love interest/eager soldier/hero, so no complaints there. He spends a lot of time on his hands and knees which is interesting and highly entertaining when trying to escape a Terminator!
Last but not least, we have Arnie and his relentless pursuit of this role. Let it go for the love of God man! There are women and children out here!
Seriously, as amusing as it is to watch them continuously try to teach him social skills, he really needs to let it go. The terminator is an iconic role and he is in danger of destroying it. He does well by not making him involved in too much fighting as it would just look odd! Gereatric robots are not cool people!

All in all, Genisys was a surprisingly good film. It shamelessly sets itself up for sequels which will forever not make sense as the Terminator universe is one of a fixed timeline. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, SKY NET WILL DESTROY YOU!

Until they figure that out, we’ll have fun watching them fight!

NB: How do Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke result in Jason Clarke?! The genetics make no sense!

PREMIERE – GAME OF THRONES

Premiere

Today, as the true fan i am, i went to the Game of Thrones Season 4 premiere in Central London. I had the pleasure of meeting Liam Cunningham, Sophie Turner, John Bradley-West and Rose Leslie. A bit cold and not as many of the big stars of the show came out but it was an experience. Sophie Turner was amazing in going round to all the waiting fans and not just sticking to one side, while others including Daniel Portman and Gemma Whelan (who left early) went in but came back out for a few extra snaps. It was a fun evening and now im all set for Season 4, are you? 😀

Top Ten Small Screen Sexies

Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Will Smith; the sexy movie star list has been done. Now its time to give the beautiful men who grace our television sets every week at 9 a time to shine!

It’s easy to reel off a list of names of attractive movie stars but we forget that there are another set of stars who are just as hot. Every week at 9 or 10pm, there is some guy that we tune into our favourite show for. That guy who makes the show that much more entertaining and sexy. Lets see the best of the bunch!

1. Jonathan Rhys Meyers
20131124-015943.jpg

Mr Meyers is a crossover because he has been in movies too but his presence on the small screen is just as great. A former model, Jonathan has previously starred in TV dramas Gormenghast (from which he became a household name), The Tudors (2007) and most recently in Dracula. The epitome of the Irish bad boy, Meyers’ salary for Dracula has reportedly been withheld until he completes all 10 episodes of the series. The producers wanted to safe guard themselves unless Jonathan had any more issues with his alcoholism. Sexy right?

2. Brett Tucker
20131124-020119.jpg

Not the most famous of the guys on the list but this sun kissed Australian gladiator is saying a lot these days. Known to us TV geeks as Harry Davis in Mistresses, Brett Tucker is one hot cookie. He had a small speaking role in Thor: The Dark World alongside fellow Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth but we expect to see a lot from him soon.

3. Charles Michael Davis
20131124-020250.jpg

Although he has been in popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Charles Michael Davis has come to the forefront as the vampire Marcel in The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals. The half black and half Filipino actor/model is too cute for words. Something about his deep voice and intense eyes sends shivers all over me!

4. Kit Harrington
20131124-020513.jpg

“You know nothing Jon Snow!” The best line ever! Kit Harrington is no stranger to the Game of Thrones geeks out there, myself included. He’s brooding looks and dark floppy hair is enough to make your knees quiver. Kit was in theatre before joing Game of Thrones but he is set to provide his vocal talents to How To Train Your Dragon 2. Excited to hear that Midlands accent!

5. Columbus Short
20131124-021007.jpg

I’m not sure about you but I knew Columbus Short first as a dancer. He is best known for his role in Stomp The Yard alongside Chris Brown and most recently as Harrison Wright in ABC’s Scandal. Columbus is as smooth as they come, one of those guys who you would let lie to you cause he is just that fine!

6. Shemar Moore
20131124-085313.jpg

An oldie but goodie, Shemar Moore appeared on the small screen as Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless. We’re British so we probably never saw that show. We knew him as Terry in The Brothers and that dude with the messed up canerows in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Now he is FBI Profiler Derek Morgan on Criminal Minds, kicking down doors and catching bad guys while still staying suave and sexy.

7. Jensen Ackles
20131124-085415.jpg

Another soap opera graduate, Jensen Ackles played Eric Brady on Days of Our Lives. Since then, he has gone on to play Jason Teague in Smallville and most recently fast food loving, beer drinking Dean Winchester in Supernatural alongside another hottie, Jared Padelecki. Supernatural’s tagline “Scary just got sexy” was obviously made just for him.

8. Idris Elba
20131124-085531.jpg
<br /
So apparently, my babes decided to break my heart and have a baby with his girlfriend. Well, congratulations to her because Idris Elba is amazingly hot. Finding fame on shows like The Wire and Luther on our very own BBC One, Idris is also in movies too. A lovely British guy to fly the flag for us over seas, Idris is a sexy guy, all six foot three of him! Swoon!

9. Daniel Sunjata
20131124-092658.jpg

Unless you watch Grey’s Anatomy or happened to catch a random episode of Law & Order, you wouldn’t really know David. He is currently a lead role on Graceland and when I saw his face on the trailer, I started watching. This beautiful Chicago native was enough reason to watch a show I have absolutely no interest in!

10. Robert Sheehan
20131124-092820.jpg

We all know and love Robert from E4’s Misfits. For a show that was completely ridiculous (in a good way), he made it all worth it. He carried the first two seasons all on his own and when he left, it just wasn’t the same. Since Misfits Robert has gone on to star a movies, the most recent being The Mortal Instruments alongside Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower. That’s pretty good for a boy from the fields of Ireland.
